Alec’s Ice Cream Review: Banana Chocolate Date Shake, Maple Cardamom, Strawberry Crumble, Meyer Lemon

Today, Kevin and I are sampling several flavors of Alex Ice Cream, purchased from Whole Foods at $8.49 each for a 14 oz container. The flavors we tried include Strawberry Crumble, Palm Springs Banana Chocolate Date Shake, Meyer Lemon Cookie, and Maple Cardamom Candied Pecan. These ice creams are made with organic, regenerative A2 dairy, which is said to be easier on the digestive system for those with dairy sensitivities.

Strawberry Crumble

This flavor features organic sweet strawberries paired with a baked oat crumble. It's made in Petaluma, California, and the ingredients highlight organic, pasture-raised, and regenerative practices. At 290 calories for a 2/3 cup serving (or 720 calories for the whole container), this ice cream offers a rich and creamy texture. The strawberry aroma was subtle, reminiscent of overripe strawberries, but the taste was pleasantly natural. The oat crumble added a homemade feel with a rustic, cookie-like texture. Overall, this is a good option if you're looking for an organic and regenerative dairy product, though there are cheaper alternatives available.

Palm Springs Banana Chocolate Date Shake

Inspired by Palm Springs' famous date shake, this flavor combines organic bananas, sweet dates, cinnamon, and dark chocolate chips. It's 310 calories for a 2/3 cup serving (780 for the container). The ice cream is packed with a variety of flavors, making it a delightful choice for those who enjoy dates and cinnamon. The chocolate chips are flat and not overly hard, blending well with the creamy texture. The combination of flavors is excellent, though the dark chocolate leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. This flavor stood out for its rich and complex profile.

Meyer Lemon Cookie

This flavor features smooth organic Meyer lemon ice cream with a lemon curd swirl and crispy lemon cookie pieces. It contains 320 calories per 2/3 cup serving (790 for the container). The lemon flavor is light and sweet, without being overpowering. The lemon cookies add a slightly gritty texture, which some may find off-putting, but overall, the lemon taste is pleasant and not too intense. It strikes a good balance, making it a refreshing choice.

Maple Cardamom Candied Pecan

The final flavor combines regenerative organic certified maple syrup, roasted sweet and salty candied pecans, and a touch of cardamom. This flavor has 310 calories per 2/3 cup serving (770 for the container). The pecans are plentiful and add a toasted flavor, while the maple syrup provides a natural sweetness. The cardamom is noticeable but not overwhelming, giving the ice cream a subtle floral hint. While not my favorite, it’s still enjoyable, especially if you appreciate a unique spice blend.

Ranking and Final Thoughts

Our favorite was the Palm Springs Banana Chocolate Date Shake, followed by the Strawberry Crumble, Meyer Lemon Cookie, and finally, the Maple Cardamom Candied Pecan. All flavors were good, and none were overpowering. If you value organic, regenerative, and A2 dairy products, these ice creams are worth trying despite the higher price.
