Alec’s Ice Cream: Triple Chocolate Blackout Cookie, Nutty Butter Brittle & Sea Salt Caramel Review

Today, Kevin and I are excited to try three flavors from Alex Ice Cream: Triple Chocolate Blackout Cookie, Sea Salt Caramel, and Nutty Butter Brittle. These 14 oz containers, priced at $8.49 each at Whole Foods, offer a smaller portion compared to traditional pints. It’s important to note that while these ice creams are more expensive, they are organic and feature A2/A2 cow’s milk, which may be suitable for those with dairy sensitivities.

Triple Chocolate Blackout Cookie

The Triple Chocolate Blackout Cookie flavor features rich and decadent organic chocolate ice cream with chunks of dark chocolate cookies and a fudge swirl. At 310 calories per 2/3 cup serving (760 calories for the entire container), it’s a treat for any chocolate lover.

Upon trying it, we found it easy to scoop, even after just 10 minutes out of the freezer. The flavor is intensely chocolatey, with a slightly malty undertone. The dark chocolate cookies add a unique texture, making each bite interesting. The fudge swirl blends in well, providing extra richness without overwhelming the palate. Despite the deep chocolate flavor, it’s not overly bitter and has a pleasant sweetness.

Sea Salt Caramel

Next, we sampled the Sea Salt Caramel, described as smooth and creamy organic salty caramel ice cream with a rich sea salt caramel swirl. It contains 290 calories per serving or 710 calories for the whole container. This flavor was notably softer and creamier, with visible chunks of caramel.

The initial taste of the ice cream itself was sweet and delicious, reminiscent of UK-style caramel, known for its milky flavor. While Kevin appreciated the rich sweetness, I found the underlying milky taste a bit overpowering. The caramel chunks were thick and gooey, enhancing the overall experience, though this strong milky flavor might not be for everyone.

Nutty Butter Brittle

Finally, we tried the Nutty Butter Brittle, featuring salted almond butter swirled into brown butter ice cream with pieces of crunchy almond brittle. It was the flavor I was most excited about. True to form, Alex Ice Cream did not disappoint in terms of mix-ins.

However, the almonds were soft and chewy, lacking the expected brittle crunch. Despite this, the brown butter ice cream was flavorful, with a cooked caramel taste. Kevin noted that while the texture wasn't as crispy as anticipated, the flavor profile was still enjoyable. If you’re expecting traditional brittle crunch, you might be slightly disappointed, but the overall taste is delightful.

Conclusion

Out of the three flavors, Kevin preferred the Sea Salt Caramel for its unique taste, while I favored the Nutty Butter Brittle despite its softer texture. The Triple Chocolate Blackout Cookie is a safe bet for any chocolate enthusiast.

These flavors can be found at Whole Foods and possibly The Fresh Market. If you’re looking for a high-quality, organic ice cream with interesting flavor profiles and mix-ins, Alex Ice Cream is worth trying. Let us know if you plan to give any of these a try!
