Today, Kevin and I are sampling some premium cold brew lattes from Bones Coffee Company. We picked up four flavors at Walmart: S'mores, Holy Canoli, French Toast, and Fruity Cereal. Priced at $2.98 each, these seemed like a good deal compared to the $3.33 per can price on the company's website, plus shipping.
S'mores Cold Brew Latte
The S'mores flavor is advertised as "s'mores flavored coffee," with 220 calories and 255 milligrams of caffeine per 11 oz can. We chilled our lattes before tasting. The aroma hinted at chocolate, but the flavor was quite bitter, typical of strong coffee. Although there were sweet undertones, it wasn't overly sugary, making it less appealing for those who prefer sweeter coffee drinks like Starbucks frappes. A subtle marshmallow aftertaste did emerge, aligning with the s'mores theme.
Holy Canoli Cold Brew Latte
Holy Canoli, at 210 calories and 255 milligrams of caffeine, features playful artwork of a Godfather-like figure holding a cannoli. The flavor reminded us of creamy coffee with a pronounced sweetness, albeit with a strong coffee undertone. This balance of sweet and bitter made it enjoyable, but the high calorie count is a downside.
French Toast Cold Brew Latte
The French Toast flavor, also at 210 calories and 255 milligrams of caffeine, gave off a vanilla and cinnamon aroma. While some found it smooth and pleasantly sweet, others thought the cinnamon was too harsh and overpowering. Despite this, it was considered one of the better flavors due to its balanced sweetness.
Fruity Cereal Cold Brew Latte
The Fruity Cereal flavor, at 210 calories and 255 milligrams of caffeine, intrigued us with its promise of a fruity cereal taste. The initial flavor was overwhelmingly artificial, but the aftertaste did resemble cereal milk, particularly Fruity Pebbles. However, the artificiality was off-putting, making this our least favorite of the bunch.
Overall Impressions
While the cold brew lattes from Bones Coffee Company offer interesting flavors, the high calorie content and strong coffee base might not suit everyone's taste. The artwork and branding are appealing, but the price and flavor profile may not justify a bulk purchase directly from the company. For those curious, buying individual cans from Walmart is a cost-effective way to sample these unique beverages.
Favorites:
- Holy Canoli: Creamy, sweet, and well-balanced.
- French Toast: Smooth with a hint of vanilla and cinnamon.
- S'mores: Slightly bitter with a marshmallow aftertaste.
- Fruity Cereal: Artificial taste overshadowed the cereal milk flavor.
