Carlo’s Bake Shop: Every Buddy’s Spring Cake Three Desserts In One Review

Today, Kevin and I are excited to share our experience with two cakes from Buin Bakery, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Buin Bakery is renowned in the area, and we discovered these treats at Jungle Jim's International Market, priced at $9.99 each. We tried the Original Double Butter Cake and the Cinnamon Strudel Cake, and here's our detailed review.

Unboxing and First Impressions

We decided to show you a close-up of the cakes before diving in. The Original Double Butter Cake looked rich and buttery, resembling an ooey-gooey butter cake. The Cinnamon Strudel Cake was covered in a generous layer of powdered sugar, adding to its visual appeal.

Serving Sizes and Calories

Each cake provides 12 servings, with one serving being 57 grams and containing 230 calories. While the recommended serving size is practical, we opted to cut the cakes into nine pieces, yielding larger portions.

Tasting the Original Double Butter Cake

Cutting into the Original Double Butter Cake was easy, revealing a fluffy texture. However, the cake was slightly dry, similar to a pound cake. Despite its dryness, the flavor was delightful, though we felt it wasn’t exceptional. We agreed that for $10, we expected a more moist and flavorful cake.

Tasting the Cinnamon Strudel Cake

The Cinnamon Strudel Cake was also easy to cut and had a pleasant texture. However, it shared the same dryness as the Original Double Butter Cake. The cinnamon crumb topping added a nice touch, but it felt like it was added post-baking, leading to a crumbly texture. We found the cinnamon flavor more appealing than the double butter, but it still didn’t stand out.

Buin Bakery’s Reputation

Buin Bakery has been a staple in Cincinnati since 1928. Although we couldn't visit the bakery due to their hours, finding their products at Jungle Jim's was a pleasant surprise. They also offered a box of cookies, but we didn’t purchase it since it lacked variety and was priced at $15.

Final Thoughts

While the cakes from Buin Bakery were enjoyable, they didn’t live up to our expectations for the price. They were reminiscent of standard pound cakes and lacked the moistness we anticipated. We believe that visiting the bakery in person would offer a superior experience with fresher and more diverse options.

Recommendation

If you find yourself in Cincinnati and visit Buin Bakery, we recommend trying something other than these cakes. Perhaps their donuts, cookies, or other specialties would better showcase their baking prowess.
