Today, Kevin and I are excited to try the new Powerade sour flavors. Each one of these drinks offers a unique sour twist. We have three flavors: Sour Watermelon Lime, Green Apple, and Blue Raspberry. These are sizable bottles at 28 oz each, which is approximately 1.75 pints or 828 milliliters. We purchased them at Walmart for just a dollar each, finding them prominently displayed on a large pallet in the center of the store rather than in the drink aisle.
Product Details
These drinks boast 50% more electrolytes than the leading sports drink, along with added vitamin C and B12. Here’s a quick nutritional breakdown:
- Calories: 80 per 12 oz (the bottle contains 2.5 servings)
- Sodium: 250 mg per 12 oz (compared to 160 mg in leading sports drinks)
- Potassium: 80 mg per 12 oz (versus 50 mg in leading sports drinks)
The drinks are produced by the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s noteworthy that despite their higher sodium content, these drinks are designed for hydration and electrolyte replenishment, making them suitable for athletic activities.
Tasting Notes
Sour Watermelon Lime: Upon opening, the watermelon scent is very strong. The taste, however, is quite light and not as robust as expected. The watermelon flavor isn't pronounced, and the lime is barely noticeable. The flavor is more akin to the watery, less desirable part of the watermelon rind. There's an underlying saltiness, which might be balanced by the sourness, but overall, it’s not a standout flavor.
Sour Green Apple: This flavor is more distinct compared to the watermelon lime. The green apple taste is present but still light, with a noticeable salty undertone. While it’s better than the watermelon lime, it doesn’t deliver the strong, candy-like punch that one might expect from the vibrant packaging.
Sour Blue Raspberry: This is the strongest flavor among the three. It has a pronounced sourness and reminds me of blue raspberry Sour Patch Kids. The flavor is reminiscent of blue freezer pops but with added sourness. This one stands out as the best among the three flavors.
Overall Impressions
While these Powerade sour flavors are not overly strong in taste, they could serve well for hydration purposes during physical activities. However, if you’re expecting a candy-like sweetness similar to other energy drinks, you might be disappointed. The calorie content is relatively high for a drink, especially when compared to zero-calorie options like Clear American water, which offers a candy-like flavor without the calories.
For those who enjoy blue raspberry candy, the Sour Blue Raspberry flavor might be worth trying. Otherwise, the flavors are relatively light and salty, which may not appeal to everyone. If these were available in a zero-calorie version, they might be more appealing for regular consumption.
