Today, Kevin and I are diving into an exciting taste test of pretzels from Pretzels.com. These were thoughtfully sent to us by Michael—thank you so much, Michael! We’ll be sampling the Honey Maple, Football Pizza, and Bacon Bourbon Jam flavors. Let’s get started.
When we received the package, the first thing we noticed was that the flavor names are printed in very small text on the bottom of each package. This made it a bit tricky to identify which flavor we were about to try without flipping the bags over.
Exploring Pretzels.com
Before we get to the tasting, I visited Pretzels.com to get a better sense of their offerings. The variety is impressive, with an array of flavors such as Salted Honey Butter, Buttered Cinnamon Sugar, Sea Salt Caramel, Garlic Ranch, Homemade Honey Mustard, Wisconsin Cheddar, and many more. They also offer gift boxes, which could make for great presents, and even limited-edition items like a caramel-stuffed soft pretzel deluxe box.
Honey Maple Pretzels
First up, the Honey Maple pretzels. The packaging indicates that five pretzels are 120 calories, which seemed odd. We counted and found you actually get around 20 pretzels for that calorie count.
On tasting, these pretzels were delightfully sweet, almost candy-like, and reminiscent of a sweet cereal. The maple flavor is balanced and not overly artificial, more akin to a light pancake syrup. However, the texture is quite tough and chewy, which was a bit disappointing. Despite the texture, the flavor is a major highlight and could easily become a favorite snack.
Football Pizza Pretzels
Next, we tried the Football Pizza pretzels. This time, the nutritional information was accurate, stating 25 pretzels are 120 calories.
The pretzels are well-seasoned, and you can clearly see the spices. The flavor profile leans towards a mild pizza taste with notes of tomato powder, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and parmesan. Unfortunately, the texture issue persisted, and there was a strong, singular spice that overshadowed the other flavors. While the concept is appealing, the execution left us wanting more of a traditional pizza sauce flavor.
Bacon Bourbon Jam Pretzels
Lastly, we sampled the Bacon Bourbon Jam pretzels, which also correctly list 25 pretzels for 120 calories.
These pretzels offer a smoky flavor with a hint of sweetness, akin to candied bacon. There’s a subtle bourbon note, but it’s not very pronounced. The seasoning includes onion powder, maple granules, and molasses powder, creating a complex flavor profile. The texture is consistent with the other pretzels—tough and chewy. While the smoky-sweet flavor is enjoyable, the lack of a distinct bourbon taste and the tough texture were drawbacks.
Overall Impressions
The consistent tough texture across all flavors was surprising, especially considering Pretzels.com specializes in pretzels. The packaging is visually appealing and suggests a premium product, but the texture doesn’t quite match up to other well-known brands like Snyder's of Hanover or Rold Gold.
Among the three flavors, the Honey Maple was the clear winner for us, followed by the Bacon Bourbon Jam. The Football Pizza flavor was unique but didn’t hit the mark for us due to the overpowering spice.
