Review: Dolly Parton Decadent Chocolate Pie

Today, Kevin and I are reviewing the Dolly Parton Decadent Chocolate Pie. This pie features a fudgy filling and a flaky pastry crust, topped with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. It weighs 21.6 oz (1 lb 5.6 oz or 612 g) and costs $8.99 at Meijer. We found it in the freezer section and kept it frozen until we were ready to review it.

Preparation

To prepare the pie, remove it from the carton, leave the plastic on, and thaw it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. For the best results, I usually place the entire box in the refrigerator overnight. This method works well for similar pies from brands like Edwards, Marie Callender, and Trader Joe’s.

Serving Size and Calories

The pie is meant to provide six servings, though I inadvertently cut it into more manageable, smaller pieces. Each serving (113 g) contains 510 calories. The pie contains no high fructose corn syrup and uses ingredients like palm oil, corn starch, and soybean oil.

Taste and Texture

The pie has a typical frozen pie crust, which is decent but not particularly flaky. The chocolate filling is very thick and has a taste reminiscent of pudding with a slight coffee-like bitterness. The overall flavor is dense and not overly sweet, similar to a thickened dark chocolate pudding.

Verdict

While the pie isn’t bad, we don’t feel it justifies the $9 price tag. It lacks the sweetness and complexity of a good chocolate cream pie. The texture is dense and brownie-like, but the flavor is somewhat plain. We also reviewed Dolly Parton’s cheesecake, and we unanimously preferred the cheesecake for its sweetness, better texture, and more flavorful graham cracker crust.

If you’re looking for a rich, chocolatey dessert, this pie might not satisfy your cravings. For those interested in trying a Dolly Parton dessert, we recommend the cheesecake over the chocolate pie.

Conclusion

Overall, while the Dolly Parton Decadent Chocolate Pie has some redeeming qualities, it doesn’t quite hit the mark for us. We hope you found this review helpful.

Disagree....while the crust is not my favorite, the pie almost reminds me of a flour less chocolate cake texture. Or the cookie dough of the chocolate krinkle cookies I made as a child. And I love the dark chocolate/almost coffee flavor. This is my new favorite pie!!
