Review of Junk Gypsy Kitchen Buttermilk Biscuits

Today, Kevin and I are trying out Junk Gypsy Kitchen's Buttermilk Biscuits, sent to us by Asma from Ohio. This is our first time hearing about Junk Gypsy Kitchen. The packaging mentions "Gypsy Dad's Buttermilk Biscuits," but there seems to be no connection to the TLC shows featuring gypsy brides or wives. According to the box, it yields 10 biscuits. Here’s our step-by-step review.

Ingredients and Preparation

For this recipe, you’ll need:
- One packet of the biscuit mix (provided in the box)
- 1/3 cup of melted butter
- 2/3 cup of buttermilk (or milk as a substitute if you don't have buttermilk)
- A greased cast iron skillet

Directions:

1. Preheat Your Oven: Set your oven to 450°F.
2. Melt the Butter: Grease your skillet and add a tablespoon of butter. Place it in the oven to melt.
3. Mix Ingredients: While the butter is melting, combine the biscuit mix with the melted butter and gradually add the milk.
4. Knead the Dough: Flour your hands and knead the dough gently. Note that the directions don’t specify the need for extra flour, but you’ll need some to handle the dough.
5. Form Biscuits: The instructions suggest placing the entire dough in the skillet and turning it in the butter, but we recommend forming 10 individual biscuits instead.
6. Bake: Place the biscuits in the oven. Despite the box indicating a bake time of 10-12 minutes, ours took 15 minutes. Keep an eye on them to avoid overbaking.

Baking Experience

Our experience highlighted some issues with the directions. They were unclear about how to form the biscuits and the need for extra flour. Additionally, the baking time suggested on the package was inaccurate. We found that 15 minutes were necessary for perfect biscuits.

Final Product

The biscuits turned out fluffy and soft, resembling muffins in texture but with a distinct biscuit form. The flavor was excellent, especially with a bit of butter added. However, they were slightly dry, which is typical for biscuits.

Taste Test

Plain, the biscuits had a nice texture and flavor. With butter, they were even better. We compared them to Bisquick biscuits and found that these had a superior texture, although Bisquick biscuits have a similar flavor.

Conclusion

Despite the confusing directions, Junk Gypsy Kitchen's Buttermilk Biscuits are delicious and worth the effort. They offer a fluffy texture and pleasant flavor that stands out among similar products.
