Rotating Supplies and Using Expired Cake Mixes Safely

Hi, it's Alaska Granny. Part of being a responsible prepper is rotating your supplies. For example, if you're stockpiling canned food, you need to use them within a reasonable amount of time. Many canned foods will last long past their "best by," "use by," or "sell by" dates, but not always. It's best to use them close to the date to ensure optimal quality. Over time, food begins to degrade, losing some of its nutritional value. It may still be safe to eat, but it might not taste as good.

Do you have cake mixes in your prepper pantry? Pay attention to the expiration date on the box. Once cake mixes expire, the active ingredients may deteriorate. There is a warning about using expired cake mixes because mold spores can grow in the ingredients. If you have a mold allergy, using an expired cake mix could be life-threatening.

Easy Apple Dump Cake Recipe

Here's an easy recipe for Apple Dump Cake, perfect for using your prepper pantry supplies. You'll need:

  • 2 cans of apple pie filling
  • 1 yellow cake mix
  • 2 sticks of butter

Instructions:

  1. Heat your crock pot on high and spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Pour in the two cans of apple pie filling.
  3. Evenly sprinkle the cake mix over the apple pie filling.
  4. Cut the butter into pieces and lay them over the cake mix.
  5. Drape a layer of paper towels over the crock pot, then put on the lid. The paper towels will absorb excess moisture, preventing the cake from becoming too soggy.
  6. Keep the crock pot on high for about 2.5 hours.

Allow your Apple Dump Cake to cool before serving, as bubbling sugar can be extremely hot. Enjoy the wonderful aroma!

The Apple Dump Cake is delicious on its own, or you can top it with ice cream or whipped cream. You'll love how it smells and tastes, and it's made from ingredients right out of your prepper pantry.
