Tortuga Bourbon Cake and Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake Review

Kevin and I are excited to review two premium Tortuga cakes: the Tortuga Bourbon Cake made with Alaska Birch syrup and the Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake in banana flavor. Both were purchased from Jungle Jim’s International Market, priced at $14.99 for the banana cake and $15.99 for the Alaska cake, each weighing 16 ounces (454 grams).

Tortuga rum cakes are legendary, originating from a secret family recipe that dates back over a century. These cakes are baked in state-of-the-art facilities that produce over 10,000 cakes daily, shipped worldwide. They use high-quality ingredients, including a specially blended oak barrel-aged five-year-old Tortuga Gold Rum.

Detailed Analysis:

1. Tortuga Bourbon Cake with Alaska Birch Syrup:

This cake combines the deep, smoky flavor of bourbon with the unique sweetness of Alaskan Birch syrup. The syrup is harvested from Alaska's boreal forests, lending a rare and intricate flavor profile. The cake offers a rich, woody bourbon taste, complemented by subtle hints of caramel and molasses.

Dense yet moist, the cake is not overly wet, providing a pleasant mouthfeel. The edges are particularly enjoyable, soaked with bourbon for an extra burst of flavor.

One-eighth of the cake contains 230 calories. Despite its indulgent taste, it manages to balance richness with a manageable calorie count.

The cake can be enjoyed warmed with ice cream, sprinkled with powdered sugar and fresh fruits, or served with cream and berries. Adding a drizzle of Tortuga rum enhances its flavor.

2. Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake - Banana Flavored:

This cake is infused with banana flavor, though the dominant taste is the Tortuga rum. The banana scent is strong, but the flavor is more subtle, blending smoothly with the rich rum notes.

Similar to the bourbon cake, this rum cake is dense and moist, ensuring a satisfying bite without being overly wet.

The banana rum cake has 200 calories per serving (57 grams) and 600 calories for the entire cake, making it a relatively guilt-free indulgence.

This cake shines when warmed and paired with vanilla ice cream. It can also be topped with powdered sugar and paired with fruits or berries for a refreshing dessert.

For those who don’t have access to Jungle Jim’s, Tortuga cakes can often be found at Marshalls, HomeGoods, and TJ Maxx, though the flavor selection might be limited. World Market might also carry these cakes.

Conclusion

Between the two, the Tortuga Bourbon Cake with Alaska Birch Syrup stood out for its unique, smoky flavor and rich bourbon undertones. The Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake with banana flavor, while delightful, was more subdued in its banana essence, making the rum the star.

Both cakes exemplify the high-quality standards Tortuga is known for, offering a moist, flavorful experience. Whether you're a fan of rum or bourbon, these cakes provide a gourmet treat that’s perfect for any occasion. If you've tried either of these Tortuga cakes, share your experience with us. Thanks for watching our review!
