How to Use Apple Pay at an ATM: A Step-by-Step Guide

Using Apple Pay to make purchases at stores is common knowledge. However, did you know you can also use it to withdraw cash from an ATM? In this guide, I'll show you how to use Apple Pay at an ATM, step by step. I'll also discuss the drawbacks of using Apple Pay compared to a physical debit card.

Setting Up Apple Pay

  1. Open the Wallet App: Start by opening the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Add Your Debit Card:
    • If you haven't already added your debit card, tap the "+" sign.
    • Select "Add a Debit or Credit Card."
    • Scan your card or manually enter the card details.
    • Input the name on the card and click "Next."
    • Accept your bank's terms and complete the bank's verification process.

Once your debit card is added and verified, your Apple Wallet is ready for use at an ATM.

Using Apple Pay at an ATM

  1. Find a Compatible ATM: Not all ATMs support Apple Pay. Look for the NFC symbol, which resembles a sideways Wi-Fi icon. Major banks like Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo often have contactless readers on their ATMs.
  2. Initiate the Transaction:
    • Open the Wallet app and select your debit card.
    • Hold your iPhone close to the ATM's NFC symbol. Some ATMs require you to touch the phone to the reader, while others need the phone held nearby.
    • Use Touch ID or Face ID to verify the transaction.
  3. Enter Your PIN: The ATM will prompt you to enter your debit card PIN.
  4. Complete the Transaction: Follow the ATM's instructions to withdraw cash as you would with a physical card.

Drawbacks of Using Apple Pay at an ATM

While using Apple Pay offers convenience, there are limitations:

  • Bank Restrictions: You can only use a debit card from the same bank as the ATM. For example, at a Chase ATM, only a Chase debit card will work with Apple Pay. This is true for other banks like Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
  • ATM Availability: Not all ATMs are equipped with contactless readers.

Conclusion

Using Apple Pay at an ATM is a convenient alternative to carrying a physical debit card, but it comes with certain restrictions. To learn more about using Apple Pay, check out my video on how to use Apple Pay to pay for gas, even at older gas stations.
