How to Use Apple Pay at Gas Stations: A Comprehensive Guide

Using Apple Pay for purchases at stores is incredibly convenient, but did you know you can also use it to pay for gas? Here are three ways to use Apple Pay at gas stations.

1. Using Apple Pay with an NFC Reader at the Pump

The easiest way to use Apple Pay at a gas station is with an NFC reader on the pump. You'll recognize an NFC reader by its symbol, which looks like a sideways Wi-Fi icon, and the four green LED lights above it.

Here's how to use Apple Pay with an NFC reader:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Select the card you want to use.
  3. Hold your phone close to the NFC reader (within an inch).
  4. Follow the prompts on your phone to pay with Touch ID or Face ID.
  5. Once the transaction is processed, you'll see a checkmark and can start pumping gas.

2. Using the Gas Station's App

Many major gas companies have apps that allow you to pay directly from your phone using Apple Pay. Some of these companies include BP, Texaco, Shell, ExxonMobil, and 7-Eleven.

To use this method:

  1. Download the gas station’s app.
  2. Link your Apple Pay account within the app.
  3. Follow the app’s instructions to pay for your gas.

3. Paying Inside the Convenience Store

If the gas pump doesn’t have NFC capabilities, you can use Apple Pay inside the convenience store. Most stores have NFC-enabled registers.

To pay inside:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Select the card you want to use.
  3. Hold your phone close to the store’s NFC reader.
  4. Complete the transaction with Touch ID or Face ID.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Apple Pay at the Pump

If you’re new to using Apple Pay at gas stations, here's a detailed guide:

  1. Open the Wallet app and select your preferred card.
  2. Approach the NFC reader at the pump with your phone.
  3. Unlock your phone using Touch ID or Face ID.
  4. Hold your phone near the reader until you see a checkmark confirming the payment.
  5. Start pumping gas once the transaction is processed.
