Buc-ee’s Kettle Chips: Bold ‘N Blended, Sweet Southern BBQ & Original Review

Today, Kevin and I are sampling a variety of kettle-cooked chips from Bies. We have three flavors to review: Original, Sweet Southern Barbecue, and Bold and Blended. Each 2-ounce (56g) bag cost $1.79 at Bies. Notably, these chips are gluten-free, and free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

General Impressions

Bies Kettle Cooked Chips are crafted in Lake Jackson, Texas. The brand promises a gourmet experience with each bag, emphasizing the care and effort put into making every chip perfectly crisp and flavorful. However, our experience varied across the different flavors.

Original Flavor

- Calories: 300 per 2 oz bag
- Taste: The original flavor was somewhat disappointing. The chips lacked sufficient salt and had an uneven texture. Some chips were hard and crunchy, but the overall texture resembled that of sweet potato chips – not quite the traditional crunch expected from kettle-cooked chips.
- Verdict: Not recommended. The original flavor didn't meet our expectations, especially given the high calorie count.

Sweet Southern Barbecue

- Calories: 290 per 2 oz bag
- Taste: This flavor was also underwhelming. Despite the "Sweet Southern Barbecue" label, the chips didn't offer the rich, flavorful punch typical of barbecue chips. The taste was bland and lacked the expected sweetness and depth.
- Verdict: Another miss. The Sweet Southern Barbecue chips failed to deliver on both taste and flavor.

Bold and Blended

- Calories: 290 per 2 oz bag
- Taste: This was the standout flavor. The Bold and Blended chips combined salt and vinegar, barbecue, onion, and garlic. While the onion and garlic were subtle, the predominant flavors were salt and vinegar with a hint of ketchup, likely from the barbecue seasoning.
- Verdict: Highly recommended. These chips offered a unique and enjoyable flavor profile, making them the best among the three flavors we tried.

Conclusion

Out of the three flavors we tried, Bold and Blended was the clear winner, providing a distinctive and satisfying taste. Both the Original and Sweet Southern Barbecue flavors fell short, lacking the depth and richness expected from kettle-cooked chips.

If you're exploring Bies chips, we suggest trying the Bold and Blended flavor. Let us know your thoughts if you've sampled any of these chips!

Additional Notes

- Bies sells a variety of other brands, so if these don't appeal to you, there are plenty of other options available.
- The calorie content of these chips is higher than many standard chip brands, likely due to the 2-ounce serving size.
