Darrell Lea Bites: Milk Chocolate Licorice and Raspberry Flavored Licorice

Today, Kevin and I are excited to try some Daryl Lee Bites. We have two flavors: milk chocolate licorice and raspberry-flavored licorice coated in milk chocolate. We purchased these for $0.99 a bag at World Market. Daryl Lee products are widely available, including at Jungle Jim's International Market, which features an entire section dedicated to Australian goods. These bites are made in Australia and we've enjoyed Daryl Lee products before. You can find more videos by searching for "Tamy D Daryl Lee," and I also have an Australia playlist on my channel.

The packaging highlights that these bites are palm oil-free, with no artificial flavors, and made with 100% sourced cocoa. Each bag contains 7 oz (200 g) of licorice, divided into six servings of 11 pieces (30 g), each with 120 calories. The bags are resealable, but you will need scissors to open them initially.

Milk Chocolate Licorice

These bites resemble candies like Mike and Ike or Good & Plenty. The combination of chocolate and licorice is unusual. The chocolate adds a brief flavor before leaving a strong licorice taste. If you enjoy the taste of black jelly beans, you'll likely appreciate these. The licorice inside is chewy and tough, reminiscent of a traditional licorice stick. The chocolate coating melts quickly, and its flavor dissipates almost immediately, leaving the licorice's strong taste.

Raspberry Flavored Licorice

The raspberry licorice bites are slightly higher in calories, with 130 calories per 11 pieces. Like the milk chocolate licorice, the chocolate flavor is fleeting. However, the raspberry flavor is prominent and pleasant, making it more enjoyable than the milk chocolate licorice. The licorice has a tough texture, which may not be appealing to everyone. If you prefer a softer candy, this might not be the best choice. However, the raspberry flavor is mild and sweet, making it a more appealing option overall.

Final Thoughts

Between the two, the raspberry-flavored licorice stands out. Despite the tough texture, the flavor is more enjoyable, and the slight chocolate aftertaste complements it well. If you love black jelly beans, the milk chocolate licorice might be your preference, but the raspberry flavor wins for its balanced sweetness and flavor.

For those who have tried these or have access to Daryl Lee products in Australia, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you have a favorite flavor, or is there a different Daryl Lee product you recommend? Let us know in the comments.
