Hi, it's Alaska Granny! Adding food to your prepper pantry and food storage stockpile is easy with meals in a jar. Today, I'll show you how to make black bean soup in a jar. Simple recipes like this one ensure you have prepared meals ready to go. Just pull them out of your pantry, put them into a pan with some water, and in no time, you have an easy, nutritious meal for your family.

Ingredients for Black Bean Soup in a Jar

  • 1 1/2 cups of black beans
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped onions
  • 1 tablespoon of minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of celery seed
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 serving of vegetable bouillon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Jar: Start with a clean jar. You can even recycle a half-pint (two-cup) container.
  2. Add Ingredients: Add the black beans first, then layer the spices: 1 tablespoon of chopped onions, 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of cumin, 1 teaspoon of celery seed, 1 bay leaf, 1 teaspoon of chili powder, 1 serving of vegetable bouillon, and 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. If you prefer a milder soup, start with 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
  3. Seal the Jar: Tap the jar to settle the contents, then seal it with a lid. Your black bean soup mix is now ready for storage in your pantry.

Cooking Instructions

To prepare the black bean soup:

  1. Stovetop Method:

    • Add the contents of the jar to 6 cups of water in a pot.
    • Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 90 minutes.
  2. Crock Pot Method:

    • Spray the crock pot with non-stick spray.
    • Add 6 cups of water and the bean mixture.
    • Stir to moisten the spices and seasonings.
    • Set the crock pot on high, cover with the lid, and cook for several hours until the beans are soft.

For a thicker soup, mash some of the beans with a potato masher or pastry cutter. You can also customize your soup by adding vegetables, sausages, or rice. Remember to remove the bay leaf before serving.
