Great Value Cereals: Crunchy Honey Oats and Almond Crunchy Honey Oats

Today, Kevin and I are trying two Great Value cereals. While we've sampled limited edition Great Value cereals before, this time we're trying their standard varieties. Typically, we’ve enjoyed unique flavors like Blueberry Pie, Cotton Candy, and Apple Fritter, but today it's all about the basics.

We have two cereals: Crunchy Honey Oats and Almond Crunchy Honey Oats. The Almond version was recommended by Martin, who thought it would be interesting to compare it to the regular Crunchy Honey Oats. Here's what we found:

Packaging and Price

- Crunchy Honey Oats: 23 oz box, priced at $3.27.
- Almond Crunchy Honey Oats: 18 oz box, priced at $2.67.

Crunchy Honey Oats

The Crunchy Honey Oats box promises a naturally flavored cereal with 12 grams of whole grains per serving. It’s a corn and wheat cereal with granola.

Ingredients:

- De-germed yellow corn
- Whole grain wheat
- Whole grain rolled oats
- Rice, corn syrup, salt
- Cinnamon, molasses, honey, and caramel

Taste and Texture:

- Dry: Very sweet with a noticeable cinnamon flavor from the granola, though the box highlights honey more prominently.
- With Milk: The sweetness diminishes slightly, with the cinnamon flavor becoming more apparent. The crispy flakes and granola add a good texture, but the overall flavor is less impressive compared to other cereals.

Overall, the cereal isn't as flavorful as regular or Frosted Corn Flakes. The lack of strong sweetness and the unexpected cinnamon flavor might not appeal to everyone.

Almond Crunchy Honey Oats

This cereal is similar to Crunchy Honey Oats but includes almonds.

Calories: One cup (40g) has 160 calories.

Taste and Texture:

- Dry: Similar to Crunchy Honey Oats but with added almonds. There’s a distinct almond flavor and a similar cinnamon presence.
- With Milk: The almond flavor adds a nice crunch, but the cereal still isn't very sweet. The cinnamon flavor is stronger in this variant, which might be off-putting for some.

Critique:

- The almonds are sparse, making the "Almond" label a bit misleading. You might only get a small handful of almonds in the entire box.
- While the almond texture is enjoyable, the overall flavor doesn’t compare well to other cereals with more robust tastes and sweetness.

Conclusion

While both cereals are decent, they fall short in comparison to more flavorful and sweet cereals available on the market. The almond version adds a bit of crunch, but the sparse almond pieces are a letdown. For those who prefer a sweeter and more flavorful cereal, opting for name brands might be a better choice. However, for a budget-friendly option, these Great Value cereals are passable.

The boxes also include fun puzzles and games, adding a bit of entertainment to your breakfast routine. Overall, these cereals are not bad, but there are definitely better options available.
