How to Request Access to an LLC or Corporation on BizFile

Hi, I’m Attorney Elizabeth Potts Weinstein. Today, I’ll guide you on how to request access to an LLC or Corporation using BizFile, especially if someone else formed the entity for you. In this case, I paid IncFile to form an LLC in California, and I’ll demonstrate how to gain access to it.

Step-by-Step Process to Request Access

  1. Log In to BizFile

    • First, navigate to the BizFile website and log in. If you don’t have an account, create one. Use the email address associated with the service (LegalZoom, IncFile, etc.) that formed your LLC or Corporation. In my case, I’m using my personal email, which I used with IncFile.
  2. Search for Your Business

    • Once logged in, use the search function to find your business. I searched for "EPW Coaching," the LLC formed for me.
  3. Filing Documents and Requesting Access

    • From here, you can file amendments, request certificates, view history, or request access. Although you can file a Statement of Information and pay the $20 fee, it doesn't automatically grant you full access to the business for other tasks.
    • To become an authorized user, you need to request access. A current authorized user must approve this request.
  4. Submitting the Request

    • Click on "Request Access" and follow the prompts. You’ll see a confirmation that your access request has been submitted. Note that some entities might allow access through a PIN, but in my case, this option wasn’t available.
  5. Checking Help Resources

    • If you encounter issues, refer to the help section. Unfortunately, BizFile’s help resources are in a PDF format, which might not be user-friendly.
  6. Waiting for Approval

    • After requesting access on March 16th, 2023, and not receiving a response within a week, I followed up. On March 24th, I replied to an IncFile email, which created a support ticket. By the same afternoon, a supervisor escalated and granted my access.

Tips for Success

  • Follow Up Promptly: If you don’t receive a timely response, contact the service provider that formed your LLC or Corporation directly.
  • Verify Requests: If you’re on the receiving end of access requests, always verify with your clients or partners before approving to avoid unauthorized access.
