How to Use a Butane Stove

Hi, it's Alaska Granny! Welcome to Granny Camp, my off-grid cabin in Alaska. I spend my summers here, enjoying the tranquility and simplicity of life without modern conveniences like running water or electricity. I did install a solar light, which works wonderfully during the long summer days.

When I'm at Granny Camp, I cook using a butane stove. It's simple to use, and I'll show you how to set it up.

How to Use a Butane Stove

This butane stove is from Gas One, but most butane stoves operate similarly. You'll need a can of butane fuel; I'm using a Sterno butane fuel cartridge. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Lift the little cap on the stove.
  2. Remove any plastic cap from the butane canister.
  3. Insert the canister with the notch facing up.
  4. Press it in to engage and slide down the fuel lock. The canister should lock into position.
  5. Close the lid, ensuring nothing flammable is nearby.
  6. Turn the knob to "light" to ignite the stove.
  7. Adjust the flame as needed for cooking.

Simple Recipe: Not-So-Spicy Chicken Quesadilla Soup

Ever had a soup you didn't like? My late sweetheart enjoyed Campbell's Spicy Chicken Quesadilla Soup, but it's too spicy for me. Here’s how I make it palatable with a simple recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of Campbell's Spicy Chicken Quesadilla Soup
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup of rice

Instructions:

  1. Turn on the butane stove.
  2. Pour the soup into a pot and stir in the diced tomatoes.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Stir in 1/3 cup of rice.
  5. Cover the pot and reduce the heat. Make sure the flame stays on at a low setting.
  6. Use a simmer mat if necessary to keep the pot from burning.
  7. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Lunch is ready! This recipe transforms a can of soup, tomatoes, and rice into a satisfying meal.

Cooking Tips and Food Rescues

Have you ever had to fix up a dish you didn't like? Share your tips with us! It’s essential to make the most of the food we buy. Try new items in small quantities before stocking up. I ended up with extra soup because my sweetheart liked it, but now it’s up to me to make it work.
