Today, Kevin and I are sampling Mammoth Creamies Frozen Custard. We picked up three flavors: Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Butter Pecan. We found all three at Whole Foods, with the pecan flavor priced at $6.99 and the other two at $9.29 each. Surprisingly, the pecan was cheaper, possibly due to a sale or overstock.
These custards have been out of the freezer for about 10 minutes. Mammoth Creamies Frozen Custard is a high-fat, low-carb, keto-friendly dessert. Each pint contains 2 grams of net carbs, with three servings per container. A 2/3 cup serving (115 grams) is 340 calories, totaling 1,020 calories for the whole pint. It's important to note that while it's low in carbs, it's not low in calories.
Mammoth’s mission to create a ketogenic frozen custard began when their co-founder, Tim, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This inspired the creation of a delicious, real-food frozen custard with simple ingredients, low in sugar, high in fat, and loaded with flavor. Their custards are gum-free, made with grass-fed butter, gluten-free, and contain 2 grams of sugar.
Flavor Reviews
1. Vanilla Bean
- Appearance and Texture: It has a slightly chalky appearance with tiny black vanilla bean specks. The custard melts quickly in your mouth, resembling a vanilla-flavored water.
- Taste: The flavor is pleasant but lacks sweetness and richness. It's a decent option for those on a keto diet or managing diabetes, but it doesn't compare to traditional ice cream in terms of creaminess.
- Overall Impression: It’s a good keto-friendly option but wouldn’t be our top choice.
2. Chocolate Peanut Butter
- Appearance and Texture: Despite looking chalky, it’s not. However, it’s harder than the vanilla bean and doesn’t soften easily, even after 10 minutes.
- Taste: It has a strong peanut powder flavor without any significant sweetness. The texture isn’t as smooth as the vanilla, and it’s quite disappointing.
- Overall Impression: The taste and texture are not appealing, making it a flavor we wouldn’t recommend.
3. Butter Pecan
- Appearance and Texture: This flavor has visible pecan halves, which is impressive. It’s a bit softer than the chocolate peanut butter but still firm.
- Taste: It has a typical butter pecan flavor, but it’s not sweet. The pecans are crunchy, which adds a nice texture, but the overall experience is dry and leaves you wanting water.
- Overall Impression: If you enjoy butter pecan and are on a keto diet, this might be a good choice. However, it’s not something we would choose outside of dietary restrictions.
Conclusion
While Mammoth Creamies offers a keto-friendly frozen custard option, the high calorie and fat content might be a concern. Among the three flavors, Vanilla Bean is the most acceptable. However, none of these flavors would be our go-to choices if we weren't following a keto or diabetic diet. If you've tried Mammoth Creamies, let us know your thoughts!
