Manischewitz Macaroons: Rocky Road, Pistachio Orange & Chocolate Chip Review

Today, Kevin and I are excited to try some macaroons from the Manischewitz brand. We picked up the Almond and Red Velvet flavors at Meijer for $6.39 each. As long-time fans of macaroons, especially coconut-based ones, we were eager to sample this brand.

About Manischewitz Macaroons

These macaroons are produced in Bayonne, New Jersey, and are described as almond-flavored confections made with real almonds and coconut. They come in a 10 oz bag and are Kosher for Passover and gluten-free. We found them prominently displayed among other Kosher Passover foods at the store.

A Serendipitous Encounter

While we were examining the macaroons, a woman approached us with a question. She asked if we knew which products were suitable for Seder. Unfortunately, we weren't sure, as our interest was purely culinary, not religious. It was a friendly exchange and highlighted how diverse food interests can bring people together.

Exploring the Flavors

Manischewitz macaroons come in a variety of flavors, including:

  • Rocky Road
  • Plain Coconut
  • Cappuccino Chip
  • Chocolate
  • Chocolate Chip
  • Red Velvet
  • Pistachio
  • Orange
  • Hazelnut Chocolate Chip
  • Chocolate Nut Brownie
  • No Sugar Added Coconut
  • Cookies and Cream

We only had the Almond and Red Velvet flavors but would love to try them all.

Tasting Notes

  • Almond Macaroons: These have a strong almond flavor, reminiscent of cherries, combined with a moist, chewy coconut texture. They are slightly toasted on top, adding to the delightful experience. Each macaroon is 100 calories, making it a satisfying treat without being overly indulgent.

  • Red Velvet Macaroons: These macaroons boast a rich chocolate flavor without any bitterness. The sweet, chocolatey taste is complemented by the same chewy coconut texture. At 100 calories each, they are a perfect guilt-free indulgence.

Ingredients and Nutrition

The Almond macaroons include sulfite-free coconut, invert sugar, tapioca starch, egg whites, almonds, and almond flavor. The Red Velvet macaroons have similar ingredients with the addition of cocoa powder, natural and artificial flavoring, and food color (red number 40).

Availability

We found a comprehensive display of these macaroons at Meijer, but they might also be available at other stores like Whole Foods or Fresh Market. We haven't seen such extensive displays at Walmart, so it might be worth checking specialty stores if you're interested in trying them.

Conclusion

Both flavors we tried were of high quality, with the Red Velvet edging out the Almond for us. The macaroons' flavors are robust and authentic, making them a delightful treat. Whether or not you follow Kosher dietary laws, these macaroons are worth a try.
