Today, Kevin and I are trying Meiji brand chocolates from Japan. Meiji is known for its colorful packaging and variety of flavors, including strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. We found these chocolates at World Market for $3.99 each.
Unboxing and Initial Impressions
The packaging is reminiscent of old-school cigarette packs, which was a bit nostalgic for us. Upon opening, we discovered two types: black chocolate and milk chocolate. The chocolates are shaped similarly to Andes mints and come in neat blocks.
Black Chocolate
The black chocolate claims to have a distinctive flavor and rich aroma. It contains 190 calories per seven pieces. Each piece is small and engraved with the Meiji brand name. Despite being labeled as "black chocolate," it wasn’t as bitter as we anticipated. It had a pleasant crispness without being overwhelmingly bitter. This chocolate is more like a bittersweet variety rather than an intensely dark one.
Milk Chocolate
The milk chocolate comes in a gold package and contains 180 calories per seven pieces. It has a creamy texture and is noticeably sweeter than the black chocolate, although not as sweet as typical milk chocolates like Cadbury or Hershey. It has a smooth, creamy flavor without being overly sugary, making it a good choice for those who prefer less sweet treats.
Comparison and Conclusion
Overall, both chocolates offer unique flavors. The black chocolate is less bitter than expected, with a nice snap to it, while the milk chocolate is creamy and mildly sweet. We think these chocolates would make great gifts, stocking stuffers, or a nice treat for yourself. They're attractively packaged and offer a refined taste experience.
