Today, Kevin, AER, and I are reviewing Sweet Chop brand melms. We've previously reviewed melms, which are small chocolate pieces that you melt. Typically, you can dip pretzels or apples in them or use them for candy molds. You can find these in the baking section of most stores, but we found them at Joann’s Fabric for $3 per bag, which is a good size at 12 oz (340 g).
We have several flavors to try: bright white, dark chocolate, red velvet, and peppermint. In the past, we've tried lemon, key lime, and salted caramel. It's important to ensure the bag says "flavored," as some only have color without flavor.
Bright White
The bright white melms are microwavable, and the bag is designed for easy melting. The flavor is primarily sweet with a hint of vanilla. The texture is smooth, and they melt well. These would be great for decorating or snacking.
Dark Chocolate
The dark chocolate melms have a rich flavor, and their texture is similarly smooth. They come in 12-piece servings with 160 calories. These were a favorite for snacking, especially while gaming.
Red Velvet
The red velvet melms, although not explicitly marked as flavored, have a distinct taste reminiscent of red velvet cake with a hint of red food dye flavor. They are sweeter than the dark chocolate ones.
Peppermint
The peppermint melms have small red speckles and a creamy peppermint taste. They remind me of the soft peppermint candies available around Christmas. While a bit strong for some, these were another favorite.
Conclusion
Overall, these melms are a great product for baking, decorating, or just snacking. Our favorites were the dark chocolate and peppermint. For $3 a bag, they are a good value. If you've never tried these, you can find them in the cake decorating section, not with the cake mixes.
