Trader Joe's Super Premium Ice Cream: A Flavorful Review

Today, Kevin and I are excited to sample some of Trader Joe's super premium ice cream flavors. We have the French Vanilla, Ultimate Chocolate, and Mint Chip varieties, each priced at $4.49 for a full quart (946 mL). Let's dive into the details of each flavor.

French Vanilla

The French Vanilla ice cream has six servings per container, with each 2/3 cup serving (140g) containing 330 calories. After letting the ice cream sit out for about 10 minutes, it was soft enough to scoop easily. The appearance is classic white vanilla with no visible vanilla bean specks.

Upon tasting, the French Vanilla has a very sweet, custard-like flavor reminiscent of holiday eggnog or custard. While it's not as creamy or thick as custard, the flavor profile is similar. We found it enjoyable, though perhaps not the richest vanilla we've ever tasted. It's a solid choice for vanilla lovers at a reasonable price.

Ultimate Chocolate

The Ultimate Chocolate ice cream also has six servings per container, each 2/3 cup serving containing 330 calories. This flavor appeared very dark and had a noticeable layer of ice on top, despite being out for a while.

The taste is intensely dark, akin to cheap fudge pops you might find at a bargain store. It's a bit too bitter and not creamy enough for our liking. Chocolate enthusiasts who prefer a sweeter, milk chocolate flavor might find this one lacking. While Trader Joe's has its loyal fans, this particular chocolate flavor might not impress everyone.

 Mint Chip

The Mint Chip ice cream is slightly higher in calories, with each 2/3 cup serving (140g) containing 370 calories. This flavor stood out with its abundant, thin chocolate chips evenly distributed throughout, adding a delightful texture.

The mint flavor is pleasantly refreshing without being overpowering, and the chocolate pieces melt nicely in your mouth. This combination makes the Mint Chip a favorite among the three, offering a sweet, balanced taste that's perfect for hot summer days. The presence of ample chocolate chips enhances the overall experience.

Conclusion

To sum up, Trader Joe's super premium ice creams offer a range of flavors at a reasonable price. The French Vanilla is a sweet, custard-like treat, the Ultimate Chocolate is intensely dark but not creamy enough for our taste, and the Mint Chip impresses with its refreshing flavor and generous chocolate chips.
