Today, Kevin and I are excited to try the limited edition Great Value Cotton Candy Trail Mix. We picked it up for $7.98 for a 12 oz (340 g) bag. While trail mix isn’t usually cheap, this price seems pretty standard.
The packaging boasts a variety of ingredients: peanuts, popping candy clusters, shortbread chips, yogurt-flavored raisins, vanilla cream-flavored almonds, and strawberry-flavored confection drops. But where is the cotton candy flavor? It appears to come from the popping candy, which doesn’t quite sound like actual cotton candy.
Nutritional Information I always include a picture of the nutritional information and ingredients at the end of my videos. This time, there will be two pictures because the nutritional information spills over into the ingredients list. A 1/4 cup (30 g) serving has 160 calories, and there are 11 servings in the 12 oz bag.
First Impressions Upon opening the bag, it smells predominantly of peanuts and something sweet, possibly the yogurt-covered raisins. Here’s exactly 30 grams of the mix—it looks a bit depressing in such a small portion.
Taste Test We noticed various components in the mix: animal cracker-like cookies, pink confection drops, peanuts, and almonds with a sugary coating. However, the popping candy didn’t really taste like cotton candy.
The mix claims to have popping candy clusters with white confection coating, crackling candy, and crisp rice flour. The yogurt-flavored raisins and strawberry-flavored drops were underwhelming. The strawberry drops, in particular, seemed to suck out any flavor already in your mouth.
Final Thoughts This trail mix is more sweet and salty than cotton candy-flavored. The only connection to cotton candy seems to be the pink and blue colors. We found the almonds and yogurt-coated raisins to be the best parts. The little cookies, intended as filler, were bland and added nothing to the mix.
Overall, the Great Value Cotton Candy Trail Mix does not deliver on its cotton candy flavor promise. While it’s an okay mix in terms of sweetness and saltiness, it’s not what it claims to be. If you’re looking for an authentic cotton candy experience, you might be disappointed. However, it could make a cute addition to a baby shower with its colorful appearance.
