What type of flooring should you put in your kitchen?

Hey, it's Brad from Whole BL Construction. Today, we're at ProSource of Port Richie, checking out their stunning kitchen displays. If you haven't visited their showroom, you're missing out!

Today’s question: What type of flooring should you put in your kitchen?

Why Remodel the Floor with the Kitchen?

When remodeling your kitchen, it’s essential to update the flooring simultaneously. New cabinets may not align with your old layout, causing gaps or mismatches. Currently, we're managing this exact issue in an Odessa kitchen remodel. While we've warned our client and are addressing it with trim, it’s best to avoid such problems by redoing the floors with the kitchen.

Top Flooring Options for Your Kitchen

Choosing the right flooring can be overwhelming given the many options available. Here, we’ll focus on three major contenders:

  1. Engineered Hardwood
  2. Ceramic or Porcelain Tile
  3. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Engineered Hardwood

While engineered hardwood offers a classic look, it’s not typically recommended for kitchens due to moisture concerns. Traditional engineered hardwood can warp, expand, or contract when exposed to water. However, some modern waterproof options are available that might suit your needs.

Ceramic or Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles are highly durable and recommended over ceramic because of their density and resistance to scratches and stains. Porcelain tiles also don’t have the red backing seen in ceramic tiles, making them easily identifiable. If you have pets or kids, tile is an excellent choice due to its robustness.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Modern LVP is a significant improvement over older peel-and-stick vinyl. It’s a waterproof, click-and-lock system, much like laminate. While LVP is softer than tile, making it easier to install and more budget-friendly, it can show wear marks, especially when moving heavy appliances. Newer, denser LVP products are more durable, but tile still wins for longevity and resistance.

Budget Considerations

Installation Costs:

  • Tile: $8-$12 per square foot.
  • Vinyl: $3-$7 per square foot.
  • Hardwood: Similar to tile, but it varies based on the type.

Product Costs:

  • Vinyl: $3-$4 per square foot (e.g., Swift Train at $3.50).
  • Tile: Approximately $3.50 per square foot for porcelain.
  • Hardwood: Around $4.25 per square foot, though exotic woods can be much more expensive.

Conclusion

When choosing kitchen flooring, consider your lifestyle and budget:

  • For durability and long-term wear, tile is the best option.
  • For a budget-friendly choice, vinyl works well.
  • If opting for hardwood, choose newer waterproof engineered products.
