In this article, I'm going to show you how to deposit a paper check into an ATM, specifically using Chase Bank. However, this process is quite similar across different banks. Before you get started, ensure you have your debit card with you. If you're unsure which card to use, it should say "debit" near the Visa or Mastercard symbol. Additionally, make sure your check is endorsed. To endorse your check, flip it over to the back and sign your name by the "X". Sign your name as it appears on the front, which is typically your legal name.
Steps to Deposit a Check:
Locate an ATM:
- You need to find an ATM associated with your bank for deposits. While you can withdraw money from any ATM, deposits typically require using your own bank’s ATMs. Use your banking app or the bank's website to find a nearby ATM. For Chase, go to Customer Service and then select "Find an ATM".
Ensure Safety:
- When you arrive at the ATM, be aware of your surroundings to ensure you feel safe. If you don't feel safe, go to another ATM.
Insert Your Card:
- Insert your debit card into the ATM. Some machines also offer a tap option. Insert the chip side first, and follow the diagram on the machine to ensure correct placement.
Enter Your PIN:
- Enter your PIN while shielding the keypad to keep it secure from others.
Select Deposit:
- From the menu, select "Deposit". You may be asked to choose the account for the deposit and whether you are depositing checks, cash, or both. Select "Checks".
Insert Checks:
- The ATM will either open a door or light up the slot where you should insert the checks. Modern ATMs scan the checks as you deposit them, so envelopes are not necessary. Insert the checks, and the machine will scan and verify the amount.
Verify the Amount:
- The ATM will display the amount it read from the checks. Verify that the amount is correct. If there is a discrepancy, you can reject it and get the check back. Typically, the ATM gets it right, and you can accept the amount.
Check Availability of Funds:
- The ATM might display when the funds will be available. If not, you can check your banking app for this information.
Finalize the Deposit:
- The ATM will prompt you to take your card once the deposit is complete to prevent you from forgetting it.
