How to Use Google Pay at Gas Stations: A Complete Guide

Using Google Pay to make payments without a card is incredibly convenient, especially at gas stations. Did you know there are three different ways to use Google Pay to pay for your gas? Let's explore these methods.

1. Using NFC Readers at the Pump

The easiest way to use Google Pay at a gas pump is if the pump has an NFC Reader. You'll recognize an NFC Reader by looking for a square with an NFC symbol, which looks like a sideways Wi-Fi symbol. Above this symbol, you'll see four green LED lights.

2. Using Gas Station Apps

Many gas stations have their own apps that support Google Pay. Major companies like BP, Texaco, Shell, ExxonMobil, and 7-Eleven offer apps that allow you to pay for gas directly from your phone, even if the pumps don't have NFC Readers.

3. Paying Inside the Store

If the gas pumps don't support Google Pay, you can often use it inside the store. Many registers inside gas station stores have Google Pay capabilities.

How to Use Google Pay at the Pump

If the pump has an NFC Reader, here's how to use Google Pay:

  1. Open the Google Wallet App: On your phone, open the Google Wallet app and select the card you want to use.
  2. Hold Your Phone Near the NFC Reader: Bring your phone close to the NFC Reader (less than an inch away). You don't have to touch it.
  3. Confirmation: Your phone will show a check mark and make a sound when it reads the card.
  4. Processing: The pump will display a message that it's processing and then let you know when you can start pumping gas.

Gas Stations with NFC Readers

While not all gas stations have NFC Readers yet, they are becoming more common. Some gas stations that have them include Costco, Speedway, and Meijer.
