How to Use Target Self-Checkout: A Step-by-Step Guide

Using Target's self-checkout for the first time can feel a bit intimidating. In this guide, I'll walk you through the process step-by-step to make it easier.

Step 1: Gather Your Items

First, go through the store and gather all the items you need. Head over to the self-checkout area when you're ready.

Step 2: Check Item Limit

Some Target locations limit the self-checkout to 10 items or fewer. Count your items before proceeding. If you have more than 10 items, you may need to use the cashier lane.

Step 3: Scanning Your Items

  • Flat Scanner: Run the barcode of each item over the flat scanner.
  • Handheld Scanner: Use the handheld scanner for larger items, which can be more convenient.

After scanning each item, place it in the bagging area. For items too large for the bagging area, you can leave them in your cart.

Step 4: Complete Your Purchase

Once all items are scanned, click the "Pay" button on the screen. The system will prompt you to enter your phone number for Target Circle rewards.

Step 5: Payment Options

You'll see several payment options:

  1. Card: This includes debit cards, credit cards, and digital payment options like Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  2. Target Wallet: Use a Target credit or debit card via the Target app on your phone. I have a separate video covering the Target Wallet in detail.
  3. Gift Card or Cash: You can also use a Target gift card or cash.
  • Card Payments: Use the card machine next to the register. Tap or insert your card.
  • Target Wallet or Gift Card: These options get scanned at the register.
  • Cash Payments: Insert cash into the slots on the front of the machine.

Step 6: Finish Up

After paying, a receipt will print out, typically with a "Thank You" message indicating that the transaction is complete. Grab your receipt, put everything back in your cart, and head towards the door.
