How to Use Walmart Pay at Self Checkout: A Step-by-Step Guide

Did you know that Walmart does not allow the use of Apple Pay, Google Pay, or any tap-to-pay cards? As of 2024, the only contactless payment option at Walmart is their proprietary app, Walmart Pay. In this article, I'll guide you through the process of using Walmart Pay at a self-checkout station.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Walmart Pay

  1. Gather Your Items:

    • Walk through the store and gather all the items you wish to purchase.
  2. Proceed to Self Checkout:

    • Head to a self-checkout station once you have everything you need.
  3. Scan Your Items:

    • Scan all your items at the self-checkout kiosk.
    • Once you’re done, click the "Pay" button.
  4. Select Walmart Pay:

    • On the payment screen, you will see several payment options.
    • Look for the Walmart Pay option, which is presented as a QR code (not a button).
  5. Open the Walmart App:

    • Launch the Walmart app on your smartphone.
    • Ensure you have location permissions turned on so the app can recognize that you are in a Walmart store.
    • If the app doesn't switch to the in-store version, check your location settings or connect to the store’s Wi-Fi.
  6. Activate Walmart Pay:

    • On the in-store version of the Walmart app, select "Walmart Pay."
    • Note: Walmart Pay is available to everyone, not just Walmart Plus subscribers.
  7. Scan the QR Code:

    • The Walmart Pay feature will bring up a scanner on your phone.
    • Use this scanner to scan the QR code displayed on the self-checkout screen.
  8. Choose Your Payment Method:

    • If you haven't already saved a card in your Walmart account, you can add one now.
    • Select the card you want to use and click "Pay Now with Walmart Pay."
  9. Complete the Transaction:

    • The register will process your payment and display a "Thank You" message when it’s complete.
    • On your phone, you'll see an "Exit Pass," which is essentially the barcode for your receipt.
  10. Exit the Store:

    • If there’s someone checking receipts at the exit, show them your phone screen with the exit pass.
